Bye Bye Hawwaam!

MIKE de Kock was as much in awe of Hawwaam’s 3.50-length victory in Saturday’s WSB Premier’s Champions Challenge over 2000m at Turffontein as the thousands of racing fans who watched his flawless execution of a 5th Gr1 success, but said that he felt dismayed at what lies ahead for Sheikh Hamdan’s star four-year-old.

“When you have a horse like Hawwaam and our two juveniles that ran in the Nursery and you know they are good enough to take on the world’s best, you have to cringe for them. They have arduous journeys ahead!”

Mike elaborated: “As things stand, Hawwaam will be going into quarantine soon. He will have to spend three weeks at Kenilworth and a further 90 days in Mauritius before he can travel on to the UK where a further 180-day residency will be required should we choose to travel to Australia. Should we choose to travel to Dubai, a 30-day residency will be required.

“I know what it takes to win abroad. Hawwaam is good enough to win a race like the Arlington Million the US, and he is more than good enough to win A Gr1 in Australia. I’d like to see him race in Australia. But look what we have to go through to get there!”

Mike praised Sheikh Hamdan for his patience and said: “Sheik Hamdan is one of the world’s great owners, he has been a staunch and invaluable supporter of our industry, but we are unable to get his top runners out of the country timeously.”

Mike said that he was disappointed that the European Union had not gone to greater lengths to get the South African export protocols audit performed, even in Covid-19 time. “We see Zoom meetings happening at boardroom levels all over the world. Why can’t they do our audit virtually? Our industry is in dire straits, our operator is in business rescue but still, the EU are taking their time.

“We need help. I wonder what we must do to make the audit happen? Maybe we should go on our knees before them. They must be seeing what is going on but they are stalling. All they should do is the right thing, what will it take?”
Adrian Todd, MD of South African Health & Protocols, said that the EU officials were unable to travel to South Africa due to the restrictions, but with Europe ‘opening up’, there could be some positive news soon. “They have assured me that that audit will take place this year,” he said.

Mike concluded: “The future of South African racing and the employment of tens of thousands of workers in our industry rest on the shoulders of the EU. We need them to level the playing fields, because we produce athletes capable of competing on the world stage. We have done our bit, the rest is now up to them.”

Grand National winning jockey found dead

Treadwell sprang one of the biggest surprises in the world’s greatest steeplechase when riding 100-1 outsider Mon Mome to victory in 2009 for trainer Venetia Williams, on his first attempt.

He was also third on Monbeg Dude in 2015.

Other big-race successes for Treadwell included the Grand Sefton Handicap Chase at Aintree on Bennys Mist in 2015 and the Byrne Group Plate on Carrickboy at the Cheltenham Festival in 2013.

Treadwell announced his retirement from riding in February 2018, but returned to the saddle in March 2019.

As well as still riding, he was assistant to the Bridgnorth-based trainer Alastair Ralph, who described Treadwell’s death as “unbelievably sad” and a “big shock”.

Treadwell rode more than 300 winners during his career.

A statement from West Mercia Police read: “Earlier this morning police were called to an address in Billingsley, near Bridgnorth, following the death of a man in his 30s.

“The death is currently being treated as unexplained. However, at this stage there is believed to be no third-party involvement.”

Mick Fitzgerald – also a Grand National-winning rider having landed the Aintree spectacular aboard Rough Quest in 1996 – is a former weighing-room colleague of Treadwell’s.

He told Sky Sports Racing: “Seeing him winning the Grand National is in many ways the best way to remember him.

“He was a really nice guy, he was a lovely rider – and it’s just awfully sad. It’s sad for his family and anybody connected with him. It just highlights again how precious life is.”

The British Horseracing Authority’s chief executive Nick Rust also paid tribute.

“Liam had a fine career in British racing, riding over 300 winners in the 17 years that he held a jockeys’ licence, obviously none more memorable than his remarkable 100-1 Grand National success on Mon Mome in 2009 – a ride that cemented his place in racing folklore,” Rust said.

“The racing community will be united in grief today, and the thoughts of everyone at the BHA are with Liam’s friends, family and colleagues.”

Here’s the 1st 4 out of the 1m 2f Gr.3 Classic Trial at @kemptonparkrace

🥇BERLIN TANGO (3rd in Hampton Court)
🥈PYLEDRIVER (Won the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes)
🥉BRIGHT MELODY (Unpl King George V Stakes - torrid wide run)
4️⃣ HYPOTHETICAL
#ClassicTrialStakes

Berlin Tango was enormous in Gr3 Hampton Court Stakes for 3rd. Beaten home by 2 potential superstars, high up in #EpsomDerby markets-#RussianEmperor & First Receiver.
Pyledriver brilliant winning day 1 of #RoyalAscot.
He’s a major #Derby fancy now also.
Forgive Bright Melody.

HYPOTHETICAL was 4th beaten 4.8L, career start #2, in the Classic Trial at Kempton, but was eased late when big 1st & 2nd who have really franked form swept past, nailed online for 3rd.
Won debut x 5.1L
Drops from Gr3 to class 2 h’cap, well-weighted w/ 58.5kg considering.

1m 2f probably as far as he wants it but he’s dropping from  a race that I think will produce the #EpsomDerby winner at Kempton to taking on horses who have been getting beaten in 2yo & 3yo handicaps and or are unknown at the trip let alone the class.
13/2 @TopSport_com_au huge!

Who else would you want training him than John Gosden & who else would you rather be onboard then @FrankieDettori

Enable closer to return

Champion six-year-old mare Enable will make her seasonal reappearance for the second-consecutive year in the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse Stakes (2002m) at Sandown next month.

Trainer John Gosden revealed his plans for the two-time Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner on Monday.

"Enable is in good form and has enjoyed a couple of spins up the Al Bahathri (Polytrack training course in Newmarket) in the past few weeks," Gosden told Racing Post.

"But with all of the uncertainty about when racing was going to restart and even whether Royal Ascot was going to go ahead earlier this year we've decided to wait for Sandown."

The Eclipse traditionally presents three-year-olds with their first opportunity to clash against older rivals over a middle distance. However, with the Derby and Oaks at Epsom rescheduled from June 5 and 6 to July 4, this year's Eclipse on July 5 will be eligible for horses aged four or older.

Enable, who has won 13 of 15 starts, last raced in October when runner-up to Waldgeist in her historic attempt at three-successive Arcs.

Pinatubo Beaten!

Kameko proved too good for red-hot favourite Pinatubo as he lifted the first British Classic race of the season – the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Pinatubo arrived unbeaten in six juvenile starts and boasting the highest two-year-old rating for 25 years with many pundits declaring him the new Frankel.

However, he was only third as Kameko triumphed for Andrew Balding and champion jockey Oisin Murphy.

There was drama from the start as Kenzai Warrior nearly unshipped Jason Watson leaving the barriers, but all the main contenders soon settled in the pack as outsiders Persuasion and Juan Elcano cut out the early pace.

Kameko and Pinatubo were both perfectly poised to challenge and with a furlong to run it was between that pair and Aidan O’Brien’s Wichita for the first Classic of the season.

However, while 10-1 shot Kameko found plenty in the final half-furlong, the 5-6 favourite Pinatubo had no more to give and it was left to Wichita to chase home the winner, beaten a neck. Pinatubo finished a further length adrift.

Murphy said: “I’ve never won a Classic in Britain and it means the absolute world to me. It’s the stuff of dreams.

“It was a gutsy performance. He hardly blew a candle out afterwards – he must have a tremendous amount of ability.”

Legend ARROGATE Dies

The life of champion racehorse ARROGATE is over.

The big grey, who at one time was the highest stakes earner in history, has come to a sad end after it was decided he needed to be euthanized early this morning.

He had completed three seasons at stud so you just know, the progeny he left will be super, super racehorses. Life….through death, is like that.

Maybe not to his level, because he was freakishly good.

He won the Gr 1 Travers Stakes by 13 lengths, clocking in at a stunning track record 1:59.36 for the 2000m.

He did not contest the Triple Crown of his year but during his career he thrashed the Preakness winner of his age group and also humbled the Belmont Stakes winner of his age group.

He won the 2016 Gr 1 Breeder’s Cup Classic, then returned as a 4YO to win the inaugural Gr 1 Pegasus World Cup which at the time was worth US$12 million. He broke the track record again that day.

He then won the Gr 1 Dubai World Cup. Arrogate (Unbridled’s Song-Bubbler) retired the winner of 7 from 11 and US$17,422,600 in prizemoney.

Arrogate was finishing up his 3rd season at stud when he began, last week, to show signs of strain. The original thought was that he’d maybe dislocated a disc in his neck. So a decision was made last week that covering mares for him was suspended due to the sore neck.

Later, last weekend, he fell to the ground in his stall and efforts to get him back up proved unsuccessful. He was transported to the Hagyard Clinic under the care of Dr. Bob Hunt and Dr. Nathan Slovis with Dr. Steve Reed representing the insurance company.

The clinic ran a battery of tests including spinal tap evaluation, x-ray, ultrasound, CT Scan and many blood tests, but were unable to pin down the cause of Arrogate’s issues. After four days, and the onset of secondary health concerns, the decision was made to euthanize the horse.

An autopsy will be carried out.

He was just 7 years old when he died.
